Bringing In The Hay

A nostalgic history of agriculture's most romantic crop

Bringing In The Hay is a nostalgic history of old time hay-stacking focusing on the captivating apparatus fashioned to 'put it up loose' - i.e., the pre-hay baler days. The project took 7 years of research, writing and learning. The first completion date - sometime in 2001 - turned out to be the starting date. A novice makes many false starts.

The book is 8 ½ x 11 inch perfect bound format, has 124 pages and over 300 color and B & W photos. A key feature of the book is a study of the many derricks used to stack hay and why different models were favored in different locales throughout the West. I drove over 20,000 miles through 12 western states colleting data and shooting pictures of what became 17 ways in 4 major categories to stack hay.
